Thanks Cap. My dad was in the merchant marine from 1940 through the early 50's. He had some amazing stories. I have his ribbons for service in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pacific.

He did the Murmansk run a couple of times and had a liberty ship get so badly damaged by a storm that they had to run it up on a beach in Australia. No ship he was on was ever hit by enemy fire, but plenty were sunk out of the convoys he was in. The Merchant Marine had some real high losses during the war.

By the way, if anybody else is interested in WWII merchant marine stuff, "The Mathews Men" is a great book. It is about several families in Mathews, Virginia during the war.

Also - congrats on your son getting into the MM academy!
