Pretty sure most of you know that for 3 years now I have had all sorts of motor issues with my boat. I will not go over all of the disappointments, lost sleep, monies spent and aggravation. It would take too many pages and there is so much I probably could not remember it all. Lets just say the beginning issue was a parts changer (I won't even call him a mechanic) that first surveyed the motor and told me it was good. He was recently the subject of a post on this site.
But I digress my current mechanic was going by the information that I was given regarding motor condition. After an untold number of hours and others looking at the boat, we hauled it out. Performed leak down and compression test. Stopped after 3 cylinders. Here are the results: First 3 cylinders tested were 180 pounds compression 10 % leakage. Next was 150 pounds compression 15% leakage. Next was 110 pounds compression 75% leakage. Stopped at that point. I was running a maximum of 7 cylinders, probably less. No wonder it ran like crap if I went past 3500 rpm's.
So I am re-powering with a 5.7 which will give me about 300 HP. I had a 5.0 which was 250HP when it was fuel injected. Probably was 225 when I went to carburetor and probably 200 HP as it is now.
Sometimes when a deal seems to good to be true. IT IS!!!!! Lesson learned.
Mikes Marine Service in Hampstead is doing my re-power. Should be ready middle of next week. Marine Service and Repair will still be doing my service work. Hopefully the man up stairs keeps the fan off for the fall. Need to break this motor in right and can't think of a better way than running it and getting the deck bloody.

Sometimes you have to punt. I hate it when I dump money into something and end up replacing it. But, it's only money friend. Your safety and that of your crew are what matters.

Just think how nice it will be heading out the inlet and not waiting for something to happen. It will be fun again. From what I have read it ain't been too much fun for the past year.

Good Luck and GodSpeed.

Hasn't been fun for a long time. Always wondering what will happen next. At least I don't have to re-name her "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" cause you never knew who was hiding in the motor box, or "Box of Chocolates" because you never know what you're going to get. I am looking forward to full rpm's, better fuel economy, but most of all peace of mind. cheer

Hang in there Barry, it's going to get better. You will love the 300hp. Several yrs ago I repowered a 23' w/a from an old, tired, 230hp to a very low hr 300hp Mercruiser magnum. The magnum had been salvaged from a fire damaged boat and was said to have only 90 hrs (crosshatch pattern still visible on cylinder walls).

I went from a 25mph cruise @ 2.25mpg to a 30mph cruise @ 3.4 mpg. wtg
