Unless you find a smoking deal on the older version your better to go ahead and buy the newest thing out. That technology changes every year and no point spending $150 or more for obsolete technology. Also take a hard look at the garmin virb xe. Those are much better and easier to use imo and provide quality video. Thats my primary camera. Flip the switch and your recording instantly. A lot of other off brands as well so something there could suit your needs to. Really comes down to budget but you may have missed your best deals on friday. Some can be found today as well

There are more economical action cameras that shoot 4k... however they don't have as many features or ease of accessibility as the GoPro. Werewolf is right about one becoming obsolete after a year. I remember when I bought my Hero 2 for $300, i'd probably have to pay someone to take it off me now.

Go with the HERO 5 because it has image stabilization.

i'd stick with a gopro or the gopro knockoffs as all the good accessories are built around the GoPro design

I've got a GoPro Session 4 and it kicks ass, somewhat of a fish eye lense so it doesnt take the best pictures but comes standard waterproof

If you're looking at a GoPro Session, also look at a Foxeer Box 4K if you want a knockoff but still want the same guts
