We lost a member of the family yesterday to renal failure at age 3.5 yrs. Apparently, a genetic flaw caused his death. That being said, I would like to get a Boykin Spaniel. No puppy mill recommendations please. I also intend to check the shelters for Boykin puppies. Just trying to get the ball rolling. If anyone has a solid lead then please shoot me a PM. Thank You.

No but yes. I have never personally had one but my mom and dad had one several years ago. I was around him a lot. One of the best tempered dogs I have ever been around. My new house is almost finished and it sits on 20 acres with a 6-7 acre pond. About 7 more acres are wooded. We are all very active so I think he/she would fit right in and the he/she would have plenty to do outside.

Can't help you with a boykin but there will be some American water spaniels ready the first of March. AKC, etc. There pretty much the same dogs looks and personality wise. The water spaniel just won't shed as much as a boykin. They're in Rock Hill, SC

Sounds like a great Boykin habitat, that's why I asked. I had a male about 15 years ago that I got from a breeder in Fuquay Varina, NC. I too was just getting over the loss of my greatest friend, a lab/greyhound mutt I had picked off the streets of WPB, FL 13 years earlier. I was so focused to get a new friend that I didn't do much work studying the breed. The breeder was close to my house and they were really nice looking dogs.

I should have seen the signs that he was the last pup and was still there because "the owner asked us to keep him longer and then never showed up". In the end I found out he had been returned because he was batshit hyperactive. I had an acre fenced that was not enough for him. I ended up giving him to a local farmer with tons of land where he lived happily ever after.

Be carefull on the bloodlines when looking at boykins. There are two distinct bloodlines. One is from a Doctors dog out of Charleston that is taller, very coarse wire haired and hyper as hell. Stay away from them.

Check the Boykin Spaniel rescue.
