I know circle hooks are required for bottom fishing but lately I've noticed several charter captains using j hooks in their pictures. Is there something I am missing?

More than likely you are seeing these:
http://www.memphisnet.net/product/2528/hooks_mustad_39977
They look similar to J hooks but they are Circle hooks. That is all that I use on my boat. But I do keep the printed link above in case I am stopped and accused of using a J hook.

Could you give me some info on these hooks? As in, why choose these over standard circles? What are the advantages with these circles vs standard. Never seen them before and might like to try them. Thanks!

I first saw them on the Continental Shelf during a MAD event. They are circle hooks with a longer shank that makes for easier hook removal. The regular circles have a very short shank.

Was that photo taken in the FL Keys by chance?

Interesting. Good price at Memphis Net too. I just checked Amazon and found them for $32 / 100 verses $19 / 100 at Memphis

I need to get up with him if he is able to catch fish with no bait...if artificial was being used it should still be on the hook. maybe its just my eyes, but im just not seeing the classic circle hook tip on that hook. looks awful J hookie to me. it is a little suspect in my opinion............

Island Tackle in Carolina Beach stocks that hook and they are a sponsor of this site. Consider purchasing from them.

Barry, what size of the 39977 do you recommend for general bottom fishing? 10/0? 12/0? Thanks

Isn't that a bit large for BSB and triggers? I usually use a 2/0 for those guys.

This may be a dumb question, but I've never heard that circle hooks are required for bottom fishing. Is this just for certain species, required by ncwrc for all bottom fishing or just a ethical issue? I've gone on guided trips and used j hooks so continued using them for many many years without any issues from the rabbit sherif.

Circle hooks are only required in federal waters when using natural bait for bottomfish.
