Looking for some help as I'll be attempting to fish for Tarpon for the first time in this area. I know the basics relative to equipment and bait but could use some help with scouting. I have recently heard that Tarpon are pushed up in the river a couple of miles but, you've got to know where to fish. Have also heard of people posting up to the shoals just off of Bald Head. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Yeah I think that's one of those lucky catches when fishing for something else. There was on caught at this time last year at the hot hole so it can be done.

Nah you can target them, but nobody likes to talk about it.

Did you hear about the day last October when they schooled up off Lockwood Folly? I was kicking myself for not going that day.

Maisto. You have enough info to get started. I would suggest going scouting and you will find them. I caught my first local tarpon over 40 years ago. Not a new fishery. Go get em. best - glenn

There was some good info in yesterday's Southport State Port Pilot newspaper in the fishing report section. If you take the rigging advice from the above posts in the NC Sportsman articles and the location advice from the SPT paper, you should be able to get started.

I have seen them in the areas described but I have never had the right equipment with me.

To me, there is nothing more fun than hooking up with a tarpon - I've only done in in the FL Keys but a NC tarpon would be special.

Good Luck - Send some Pics

Maisto, I am writing this to say I am eating crow today. We were out with the childwish event today and I saw with my own eye (I only have one) jump clean out of the water. I also talked to some people who caught some yesterday in front of Southport. Just before dark apparently and also hold in the deeper channels.
Good luck

The big feed before Hurricane Matthew, that was one of the most special bites I've seen to date here. It was like every big king off Brunswick county, ended up there, and was on a serious feed, jumping, I don't think I saw or heard of a fish under 30lbs. Kevin had one jump and break his antenna in half..... We hooked a tarpon while we where fighting a smoker and that monster was well over 150lbs. Fifteen feet of water right at the drop off from the channel cans.

Yeah I was doing some boat maintenance that day like a dummy. Saw Nesbitt and some other guys at OIFC the next day for the dock flounder tournament and they were still talking about it.
