According to the SAFMC proposal bulletin released in April, ARS 'may' open on the 2nd Friday in July. Has anyone heard anything more definite? _________________ Parker 2510 DVWA |

I heard that there still was no decision. Not happening in July but still on table. Maybe later this year. _________________ Wellcraft 32CC

Public comments could keep it closed. Those who support the closure submitted their comments. Let NOAA know if you want to see a Red Snapper season. Silence supports keeping it closed. |

I think it has a lot to do with the catch share fishery in the gulf.Open up the East coast and then they have a little market competition. They have enough bribe money to keep it closed |

The comment period is closed; however, upon looking through the data, there is overwhelming support for opening the season. I picked a random selection of 300 out of 2477 comments and found only 2 that opposed the ammendment. Seems that the public comment aspect is extremely well represented on the support side.

The official comment period is over but the decision has not been made. It is not too late for the thousands of fishermen who did not submit public comments during the official comment period to contact NOAA. Anyone planning to fish for Red Snapper should have submitted an official public comment supporting the opening. |

Hey Chris, is my random pull of 300 responses accurate or not to the entire pool of data? Appears to be overwhelmingly lopsided in favor of opening a season. That seems to be a pretty clear response. If it's about "how many" replies they receive, then the scope of the inquiry is misleading. Hopeful you can help me understand better. How am I missing it?? _________________ Chad

Thank God somebody was able to get a bunch of fishermen to copy and paste this comment.
"As a recreational angler and conservationist, I support Amendment 43 to the Fishery Management Plan for the Snapper-Grouper Fishery of the South Atlantic Region that would allow a limited opening of the red snapper fishery in South Atlantic federal waters.
I support opening a South Atlantic red snapper season in 2018, through Amendment 43, that balances season length with sustainability. The South Atlantic red snapper stock has increased in abundance over the last several years at an even faster rate than predicted by the rebuilding plan. Abundance surveys and angler reports point to a quickly rebuilding fishery. Opening a conservative season as proposed will not only provide access and opportunity for anglers, but will also provide much needed data for a more accurate assessment of the red snapper stock.
In conclusion, I support Snapper Grouper Amendment 43 and urge swift final approval by the Secretary of Commerce.
Thank you for your consideration." |

Hello
In reading the April 13th bulletin regarding and ARS open season it states that the season may open on the 2nd Friday in July. PLEASE tell me this is going to happen. I'd love to tell my boss I'm going to be sick Friday.
Best regards,

Good morning Wes,
Unfortunately the red snapper season isn’t opening this Friday. If Amendment 43 is approved by the Secretary of Commerce and there is an opening, it will likely occur in August.
I’m afraid you will have to come up with another excuse. However, your email was the best inquiry I’ve received to date!
Please feel free to call me on my cell if you have any questions. 843/2x4-7xx8.

There would not have been many comments supporting the opening if somebody had not convinced a bunch of fishermen to copy and paste a comment. Some of the catch share charities could have easily gotten just as many people to sign a petition opposing the opening. One of the attached documents in the public comments could be such a petition. It is mostly about numbers. Although asking for or supporting something reasonable certainly helps.
It is understandable why fishermen don't comment on every issue. This is obviously an issue that is important to many fishermen. Why rely on other people to submit enough public comments when it is SOOOOOOOOOOO easy to simply say you support Amendment 43?
If you plan on fishing for Red Snapper, please officially report your catch and release any extra snapper suffering from barotrauma with a descending device. |

I'll make plans for 11/12 and 18/19, if there are 3 in August, that'll hit 2. And I'll try to fish the third be it the first of last weekend ... |

6 whole days...1 fish per day
It isn't worth the effort just to target ARS

as many as I have caught this year, I will not be missing a chance to finally bring a few home.....besides....you can only keep 1 Gag grouper, yet plenty of people target them. _________________ USCG CAPT

I only target gags till I catch one. Then target everything else.
I have not yet targeted ARS but have been catching quite a few of them. Most trips see between 6 - 10 fish and as many as 15 or so.
It will be nice to legally keep one but I am still going to toss back the smaller fish and hope to re-catch that near 20lber from a few weeks ago _________________ Squid Row III - Grady White 258 Walk Around, 225 HP Yamaha
