Coast Guard medically transports 3-month-old infant
Friday, January 01, 2016 @ 08:59:47 EST

BOSTON — Coast Guard air crews transported an injured 3-month-old male infant from Nantucket, Mass. to Boston, Wednesday.

Watchstanders at the 1st Coast Guard District in Boston received a call at 10:20 a.m. from Nantucket Cottage Hospital stating that the infant was being treated after falling and sustaining a severe head injury and possible scull fracture.

Commercial medical flight crews were unable to fly into Nantucket because of snow. Due to the immediate need for treatment, a Coast Guard flight surgeon recommended a non-maritime medical transport and Air Station Cape Cod launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to assist.

The rescue crew arrived on scene at 11:25 a.m. and safely picked up the infant along with a registered nurse who administered aid during the transport. Awaiting EMS at Boston Logan Airport ultimately transported the infant to Boston Children's Hospital. The condition of the infant is unknown.

"These air crews are trained to perform rescues, even if they aren't necessarily rescues at sea," said Lt. Joe Klinker, 1st Coast Guard District public affairs officer. "In a case like this, where we can make a real difference, we fall back on the fact that we're a rescue organization first and foremost. We were relieved to see the transfer went well, and our warmest wishes are with the child and his family."

In 2013, the Coast Guard conducted 11 non-maritime medical transports to assist fellow first responders throughout the Northeast.
