The big news this week was the increase in pompano that showed up throughout the area. Pompano are one of the most desirable species, both for their hard fighting abilities and their incredible flavor. Pompano are fantastic eating! Small jigs bounced along the bottom in the passes and out on the flats work well as they mimic the crustaceans that pompano feed on. Anglers drifting in the passes caught pompano as well as bluefish, mackerel, and ladyfish. Pompano on the flats were found fairly shallow along the edges of bars. Speckled trout, jacks, bluefish, grouper, sea bass, ladyfish, and other species hit jigs and Gulp Shrimp on the deep flats north of New Pass. August, 2019 - I head out with Tommy, Rodrigo and Ashley to fish for trout with Capt. Big John out of Port Isabel, Texas. Starting with the 1st cast we stayed covered up until the sun went down. Rodrigo caught the two largest trout. The biggest trout was 25 1/4 inches. The hot bait of the day was shrimp on a popping cork - https://amzn.to/2TZOQNa

The fishing has been just about as good as this weather has been for the past few days! We are seeing a few sheepshead still showing up in the bay. These fish are being caught on live shrimp and fiddler crabs. We are still seeing as few redfish as well. These fish are still hanging around the bridge and cut bait has been the bait of choice! The best thing about the past few days is that we got to go offshore and get on some of those delicious triggerfish! We are catching these fish on squid and cut northern mackerel. We are having the cull through a lot of undersized fish to find our keepers but we are getting it done! We are also seeing a lot of vermilion snapper as well. We are using the same bait for them as we are the triggerfish. We also went and pulled on a few big amberjacks and big red snappers as well. It is only going to get better and now is the time to go! Be sure to call us now and get on the books!

The fishing charters in Pensacola Beach are on fire right now! Today we had one of the best redfish bites we had all year! These fish ranged from 25-32 inches and were all caught on light tackle! We probably caught 15 or 20 on a 4 hour inshore charter and had multiple double hook ups! We also caught a few black drum and some red snappers that were released to fight another day. Most of these fish were caught on natural dead bait incuding shrimp and cut bait. The weather has been too rough to get out for some deep sea fishing but triggerfish open March 1st so any day that allows us to we will be targeting them! These fish are a blast on light tackle!

Fishing right now down here in Galveston is a bit inconsistent. We are boxing nice numbers of trout one day then the next day not so many. In Jan. & Feb. it is usually like this. I am using live shrimp fishing pretty deep with a light split shot for the best results. There is still some fresh water in our upper bays, so most of the trout are on or near the bottom. We are also catching a few reds on most outings. When March gets here it will be more consistent. Looking forward to a great year in 2019, we deserve it after last year. The weather (wind & rain) was tough on us in 2018. I will post a report in March and give you guys an update on the fishing. Until next time, see you on the water.

The fishing charters in Pensacola this week are still producing some great catches! The inshore fishing charters has been consistent and we have been catching a lot of black drum, snapper, redfish, and sheepshead. These fish are being caught using live and fresh dead bait fishing submereged rocks. Fishing the right sides of the tides is the most important part to success when fishing the swift currents in Pensacola Florida. Our deep sea fishing charters are seeing a lot of the same with red snapper, vermilion snapper, and some amberjack. We are catching the vermilion snapper on small cut bait or squid and the amberjack and red snapper are being caught on mostly live grunts. Don't forget spring break is right around the corner and we are filling up quick!

The proposal has passed for the daily bag limit of speckled trout along the upper Texas gulf coast to be lowered from 10 to 5 per day per person. Reducing the speckled trout limit by half was first adopted on a regionally limited basis in 2007. The lower Texas gulf coast was first to adopt the 5 fish limit. This was after Texas Parks & Wildlife gill net sampling indicated a decline in mid sized speckled trout south of the Landcut. In 2014, this was extended northward from the south end of the Landcut to just north of East Matagorda Bay near Sergeant.

There have been many explanations and reasons for this change from many different experts in this field including the Texas Parks & Wildlife commission. Some of the reasons are less big trout in our bays, too many mid sized trout are being harvested, our bays are being effected negatively due to warming bays, toxins and algae blooms and especially in the upper coast the rains and floods over the past 5 years have been damaging to the trout population.

Over time many things have changed in the fishing industry. There are more anglers fishing today and with such better equipment. Anglers today have a plethora of advanced GPS's and fish finders, they have better rod & reels, better artificial baits and quieter trolling motors. Let's face it, people are just a lot better at catching fish today than they were 20 years ago. You can't forget to mention social media where every great catch seems to be posted now days. Last but not least, today compared to years in the past, we have much more fishing guides and charters. Add technology with a changing climate and more and better anglers, that's how we get to where we are today.

The over all goal for this change, which I understand has been approved to begin on September 1st 2019, is to help improve and restore the speckled trout population throughout all our bays in Texas. Most anglers surveyed are in favor of the limits, with only about 18 percent of guides and charters and 25 percent of private anglers opposed. As a professional guide in Galveston Texas for the past 18 years, I am on board with the change. I believe the lowering of the limit will have a positive effect on our overall population of speckled trout. Most of my clients don't care to take home 10 per person anyway and I believe they will be fine with 5 per person. If this change helps increase our trout population and overall health for the future, how can you not be in favor of the change. You will still be able to catch as many as you want, just only keep 5
