My crew and I set out from Cape Fear at 5:30 headed out to Blackjack where Capt. Daves FishHere map said to start. Lines in just short of the mark and the A-fishionado crew had our first Mahi boated in 30 minutes. Picked at scattered fish for the next few hours until the bite quit. We headed off into 350-475 feet of water and moved toward Steeples. Several knockdowns but no hookups. Headed for the tower for bottom bouncing but found a 2 degree break in 130ft. Of water with a well defined weed line. Worked this line until 2:00 with more short strikes but bailing grass the whole time. Headed for the hill. 10 minutes into the trip the motor quits like someone killed the switch. No warning, no smoke, no indication of problems. It will crank and gets fuel but no ignition. 50 miles out, going to be a long trip.
The great folks in the Coast Guard relayed our message to SeaTow. A passing larger vessel kept tabs on us until communications were complete (thanks Captain!) Amazingly, at 6:00 we were hooked up and headed home. The SeaTow crew had us moored in home port at 4:30 am. They went above and beyond to make sure we made it home safe. It was a long night and Im sure exhausting for the SeaTow crew. Thanks to SeaTow Southport for the overtime and hard work. We appreciate it more than you know.
