The new Mako has been keeping up on catching this week. Had spanish up around Topsail one day, the fish were right outside the breakers at the inlet to about 40' deep. We were able to throw Maria's at them, the 21 gram size worked the best, fast retrieve fish were from 12"-18".
On Saturday had the Stinnett family from Ohio, Justin a Marine, his brother Morgan a college student, and their dad Bill. Went to the AR362 and started to pull dead cigar minnows on Pirate plugs and Hank Brown rigs. Had one king right off the bat and then kept working the area. The boats catching bait had started to leave so I started to work near where the can used to be and started picking at the kings. For a few passes everytime we passed the bait schools we hooked a fish. When the small bite we had died we ran to the river bed to find bait but no interested fish. A great day on the water with a great group of guys!
On Sunday I fished out of Wrightsville Beach with my regular client Art, decided to see if we could get him his first sailfish. Went to schoolhouse rock and put the lines in, the water was not blue and very little bait. Started to work our way out to a little NE of WR4 where we started to find flying fish and bait schools. A little while after arriving there had a sail come up on the short rigger, free spooled when he crashed the bait, felt him pick it up run a little then drop it. Started to reel the bait back and he came up on it again, freespooled and let him eat it but he dropped it again, he did not come back. Soon after that we started to pick at the kings, from 5-20 lbs. The kings were all over, eating the ballyhoos on the sailfish rigs and we caught them on a Pirate plug with a ballyhoo on the WWB. The wind had picked up to about 15kts and we headed in making good time in the seas. Another enjoyable day on the water with a great client!
