What are some opinions on fishing for spanish or kings in the late afternoon? Hard for me to get to Southport early in the mornings so was just wondering if the afternoon bite was worth it. I’m thinking like from 4pm to 7-8pm. I keep my boat at SPT marina so I wouldn’t have to fight boat ramp crowds.

I would go for it. I think late afternoon to evening has a good chance for the bite to turn on as the day ends.

We used to have one of the houses inside the hook of Cape Lookout. We wouldnt start fishing until everyone had already left. We hit the water at 6:30 and had all the fish we wanted for dinner that night by 7pm. The late afternoon bite was usually amazing.

Did the national seashore end up taking over all those houses once the leases expired? Would be really cool to own a place out there, you must have really enjoyed it.

If the sea breeze doesn't come up too bad in the evenings, it's one of my favorite times to troll for Spanish. Usually have the ocean to myself, and the bite usually turns on when the daylight starts to fade.

But maybe it's just that having the ocean to myself part that I really like.

I am certainly not the expert many of the other responders are but I often only have afternoons/evenings to fish and have done quite well on spanish. Usually do better on planers until the sun gets a little low but can sometimes find breaking fish if it is calm enough. The biggest issue is that the sea breeze often kicks up in the afternoon and makes it a little more sporty than the mornings...

when pier fishing for Spanish, I would always go from sunrise until about 8 PM and then give up until about an hour before sunset.
