Hey guys. You're going to think this is ridiculous, but...
I'm thinking about adding some horizontal gunwale rod holders on the boat, just to be able to take a few extras along when fishing with buddies. I absolutely HATE drilling extra holes in the boat, even above the waterline. Seems like every hole that's ever been drilled makes the fiberglass becomes brittle, cracks, leaks, drips rusty brown nonsense, etc.
Does anyone have any kind of adhesive or double-sided tape type-stuff they they trust for outdoor marine use? The 2-3 spinning rods I'd be mounting, usually a couple of light/medium spinning combos, probably only weigh a couple of pounds. I'd reserve my uprights for the trolling setups. Even if I had to re-adhere them once a year to keep them from falling off onto the deck, I'd rather do that than drill a bunch of extra holes in my gunwales.
Any recommendations?

I can't imagine that anything would stick reliably in constant sea spray. I think you'd have one of two issues:
1) It doesn't stick for a damn and keeps falling off. Issue #1 is your tackle getting beat to hell or breaking when it falls off. Issue #2 is hope that it doesn't hit somebody or go overboard when the rack finally falls off.
2) you actually find some kind or reliable adhesive, but when you decide you want to remove it, it's impossible to get off because it stuck so well and now you've ruined the hull when removing it so you've got to fix it.
You're looking for a goldilocks level of stickiness (reliable enough to hold, but not so reliable that it's permanent cement) and I don't know that you're going to realistically find that.

If you are not concerned about how it looks, but want something that would hold........... bond a piece of marine plywood (or other exterior material) with some 3M 5200, then screw your rod holders into the wood. Won't be "pretty" but could possibly accomplish what you are trying to do.

Yeah that's valid. If it fell, it would be into the deck, and only about 10 inches, could stub a toe. Agree with you on the adhesive. Wish there was something you could un-bond with a head-gun or a solvent, but would still stick in salty conditions and constant UV.
Time to start drilling again.

I have 3 Sea Sucker rod holders on my skiff. They work pretty good but they take up a bit more space than I was prepared for. You have to mount them to a CLEAN surface, if dirt gets behind it they WILL fall off. I don't have any complaints other than that.

there's a reason there's no universal solvent. There's no jar that would hold it.
