The Snowy Grouper Wreck
In all the talk of MPA’s going on now, you no doubt have heard of the “Snowy Grouper Wreck” MPA off of North Carolina that they are discussing making off-limits to fishing. In my travels today I happened upon a video clip from a NOAA ROV to the Snowy Wreck.
I have fished this wreck several times personally and I can tell you it is a load of fun. At close to 800 feet deep it is not something that you get to do very often. We used “Miami” rigs with old window weights on double hook rigs to fish this wreck. These things hit like a freight train and even with these BIG electric reels the fight was fun.
On 08/18/03 Researchers lowered a ROV onto the wreck at 792 feet. The wreck is 120-125 feet long and 18 feet wide. It is made of metal and is heavily encrusted with anemones. They describe it as having an ornate rail and a single mast amidships.
The video is available for download HERE
I hope to get hold of some more of the footage in the future. Till then enjoy.
