Mackerel Fishery Focus of Council Meeting in Key West, Florida – June 14-19, 2004
Members from both the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council will gather in Key West on June 14 and 15 as part of a special two-day, joint meeting of each council’s Mackerel Committees. The Committees will meet to discuss issues affecting the king mackerel fishery, including the current permit moratorium for the commercial fishery. King and Spanish mackerel stocks migrate between council jurisdictions and are managed jointly by the South Atlantic Council and the Gulf of Mexico Council in cooperation with the Mid-Atlantic Council.
An amendment to the joint management plan for Coastal Migratory Pelagics (mackerel) is being developed to address the current permit moratorium for king mackerel and may consider alternatives for limiting access in the king mackerel fishery in the Gulf and Atlantic. The current permit moratorium is scheduled to expire October 15, 2005. The South Atlantic Council will also include a joint meeting of its Mackerel Advisory Panel and Committee on Wednesday, June 16 to further discuss mackerel issues.
The Council will hold additional committee meetings throughout the week, including a meeting of its Shrimp Committee to review Amendment 6 to the current Shrimp Fishery Management Plan. The Amendment would require federal shrimp permits for vessels fishing in South Atlantic waters as well as bycatch reduction devices (BRDs) for the rock shrimp fishery.
The meeting concludes on Saturday, June 19 with a meeting of the full Council. Except where noted on the agenda, all meetings are open to the public and will be held at the Pier House, 1 Duval Street, Key West, Florida, 33040. Phone: 1-800/327-8340 or 305/296-4600.
