Council Meeting Rescheduled for Pawley’s Island, South Carolina
The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council has rescheduled its meeting in Pawleys Island, South Carolina for October 24-28, 2004. The meeting scheduled earlier in September was postponed due to the threat of Hurricane Jeanne. The South Atlantic Council is responsible for fisheries management off the coasts of NC, SC, GA and Florida’s East Coast in federal waters, or the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ) ranging from 3 to 200 miles offshore. The Council consists of 17 members from the private sector, state, and federal fisheries agencies, and meets quarterly in each of the southeastern states. All meetings are open to the public.
During the week the Council will hold meetings of various committees to address fisheries issues. These meetings begin on Sunday, October 24 with meetings of the Council’s Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC) subcommittees. Throughout the management process, the SSC provides a critical review of the scientific information necessary to make management decisions, such as stock assessments and reviews, reports on stock status, socio-economic impacts of management measures, sustainability of fishing practices, and habitat and ecosystem status.
There will be a joint meeting of the Shrimp Committee and Advisory Panel to review Amendment 6 to the Shrimp Fishery Management Plan. The amendment addresses the requirement of federal permits, use of bycatch reduction devices for the rock shrimp fishery, and bycatch monitoring and assessment for the fishery. Public hearings regarding this amendment were held in July and a comment period will be held on Thursday, October 28 at 8:30 a.m. before the Council takes action on the amendment.
All meetings will be held at Pawleys Plantation, 70 Tanglewood Drive, Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Phone: 843/237-6100 or 800/367-9959.
