Council to Meet December 6-10 in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina
The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council will meet December 6-10, 2004 in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. The South Atlantic Council is responsible for fisheries management off the coasts of NC, SC, GA and Florida’s East Coast in federal waters, or the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ) from 3 to 200 miles offshore. The Council consists of 17 members from the private sector, state, and federal fisheries agencies, and meets quarterly in each of the southeastern states. All meetings are open to the public.
A public hearing addressing options for the requirement of a federal vessel permit for the shrimp fishery will be held on Monday, December 6th beginning at 6:00 p.m. The Council has chosen a preferred management alternative that would require all shrimp trawlers to have the federal permit if they are traveling in the South Atlantic EEZ with shrimp on board, even if the shrimp were caught in state waters. The management measures are included in Action 5 of Amendment 6 to the Shrimp Fishery Management Plan for the South Atlantic. Shrimp 6/Action 5 Public Hearing Document (PDF). The Council will also take final public comment on December 10th at 9:30 a.m. on issues regarding the federal king and Spanish mackerel fishery, including the current permit moratorium and proposed changes to the fishing year. A series of public hearings addressing these issues as outlined in Amendment 15 to the Coastal Migratory Pelagics Fishery Management Plan were held October.
