The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council will meet from February 28 – March 4, 2005 at the Hilton Savannah DeSoto, 15 East Liberty Street, Savannah, Georgia. The Council will hold a public scoping meeting on Monday, February 28, 2005 at 6:00 p.m. to receive comment from the public regarding the development of an ecosystem-based management approach to fisheries management. This approach includes the development of a Fishery Ecosystem Plan and a Comprehensive Amendment. Please contact the Council office for a copy of the scoping meeting document.
Committee meetings will take place early in the week, beginning with a meeting of the Snapper Grouper Committee scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. The Snapper Grouper Committee will review management alternatives for Amendment 13B to the Snapper Grouper Fishery Management Plan. The Amendment is designed to meet mandates outlined under the 1996 Sustainable Fisheries Act. Management options include possible changes to bag limits, size limits, commercial trip limits, seasonal closures, annual quotas, and others. The Committee will develop recommendations for the full Council to consider in the Amendment. The Snapper Grouper Committee will also review and make recommendations concerning an Evaluation Plan for the Oculina Closed Area. The 92-sq. mile area, located off the east coast of Florida has restrictions in place to protect the fragile Oculina coral and associated snapper and grouper species found there.
Other committees scheduled to meet include the Advisory Panel Selection Committee, Controlled Access Committee, and the Highly Migratory Committee. The Council is scheduled to meet beginning on Thursday.
Additional information regarding Amendment 13B to the Snapper Grouper Fishery Management Plan can be found in the Winter 2005 South Atlantic UpDate newsletter (PDF). Information regarding ecosystem-based fisheries management and the Fishery Ecosystem Plan can be found in both the Winter 2005 UpDate (PDF) and the Summer 2004 UpDate (PDF).
