Coast Guard Responds to James River Oil Spill; Update #1
NORFOLK – Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Hampton Roads has moved its Command Post for the oil spill on the upper James River to Osborne Park Landing, just above river from the location of the grounded barge. This new location will improve coordination between the responsible party and Federal, State and local officials.
The quantity of oil spilled is now estimated at between 1,200 and 2,000 gallons. The Coast Guard has a robust presence, including members of the Atlantic Strike Team from New Jersey and North Carolina, the Coast Guard Cutter CHOCK and more than 20 personnel from Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Hampton Roads on scene to monitor the cleanup. The investigation of the accident is continuing.
