POTOMAC TO REMAIN OPEN DURING JULY 4 FIREWORKS
PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Recent news reports have incorrectly indicated that the Coast Guard is planning to close the Potomac River to recreational vessels during the Fourth of July fireworks display in Washington, D.C.
While a safety zone will be in place, boaters can still transit and anchor in the area under certain restrictions designed to keep boats a safe distance from the fireworks.
Under federal law, the Coast Guard has the authority to close the river in the event there is credible intelligence of a threat.
Currently, the Coast Guard has no intentions of closing the Potomac River to boating traffic during Fourth of July celebrations.
