Updated Blue Crab Assessment Available The
working with the Chesapeake Bay Fisheries Steering Committee, has released the 2005 Stock Assessment of the Blue Crab in the Chesapeake Bay. The assessment concludes that the Chesapeake Bay blue crab, although at a low level of abundance, is neither overfished nor currently experiencing overfishing. The assessment builds on recent research and new modeling techniques that have been supported by NOAA.
Prior to release, this assessment was subject to an independent peer review process. Peer reviewers concluded that, “the 2005 assessment constitutes a major advance over the [previous] assessments. There is an impressive array of research projects focused on
blue craband Chesapeake Bay” that NOAA has made possible through its competitive research program. Information contained in the assessment will play a key role in the development of harvest guidelines within the near future.
