Given the trends in landings of Atlantic mackerel, and the industry’s testimony that the fishery is poised for significant growth, it is reasonable to assume that in 2006 the commercial fishery will harvest 100,000 mt of mackerel. Therefore, NOAA Fisheries Service has agreed with the Council’s recommendation to specify JVP at zero (as compared with 5,000 mt of JVP in 2004). One research project has been approved for the Loligo squid fishery in 2006, causing an adjustment in the quarterly allocations for the fishery. Specifications for Illex squid and for butterfish would remain at 2005 levels.

NOAA Fisheries Service has published a
proposed rule for the 2006 fishing year for Atlantic mackerel, squid, and butterfish. This proposed rule specifies the amounts of the initial optimum yield, allowable biological catch, domestic annual harvest, and domestic annual processing, as well as, where applicable, the amounts for total allowable level of foreign fishing (TALFF) and joint venture processing (JVP) for these fisheries.Given the trends in landings of Atlantic mackerel, and the industry’s testimony that the fishery is poised for significant growth, it is reasonable to assume that in 2006 the commercial fishery will harvest 100,000 mt of mackerel.
