COAST GUARD RESCUES AND ASSISTS 48 BOATERS OVER WEEKEND
PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Coast Guard Fifth District crews rescued or assisted 48 boaters over the course of Memorial Day weekend.
In 53 total cases, units from Atlantic City, N.J., to Wilmington, N.C., responded to distress calls, flare sightings and medical emergencies.
The Fifth District’s area of responsibility covers 156,000 square miles of ocean, bays, rivers and tidal marshes from Tom’s River, N.J., to the border of North Carolina and South Carolina. It comprises 117 units, with 2,475 active duty members, 964 reservists and 6,800 volunteer auxiliarists.
Four sector commands oversee twenty-seven small boat stations; air stations in Atlantic City, N.J., and Elizabeth City, N.C.; 21 cutters and 10 aids-to-navigation teams.
The Coast Guard urges boaters to wear their life jackets at all times while on the water, carry working VHF radios and file a float-plan with friends or family before leaving the dock.
