NOAA Fisheries to Hold Public Meetings on Swordfish Management NOAA Fisheries has scheduled a series of public meetings regarding potential management measures for the U.S. Atlantic swordfish fishery. The North Atlantic stock of swordfish is no longer overfished, and NOAA anticipates that a new assessment in September 2006 may identify the stock as fully rebuilt. However, during the last several years, the U.S. Atlantic swordfish fishery has not fully harvested its quota as allocated by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). The goal is to revitalize the fishery so that the swordfish quota is fully harvested in a sustainable and economically viable manner, while bycatch is minimized. NOAA Fisheries will hold five public meetings to obtain recommendations from fishery participants and other members of the public: Houma , LA – September 14, 6-8pm , at the Vietnamese Community Center Manahawkin , NJ – September 18, 7-9pm , at the Holiday Inn Peabody , MA – September 19, 7-9pm , at the Holiday Inn Manteo , NC – September 20, 7-9pm , at the North Carolina Aquarium Panama City , FL – September 21, 6-8pm , at NOAA Fisheries’ Panama City Laboratory For more information, contact
