Captain Gregg MicKey Sinking
Hi Folks, it appears the sinking of the former menhaden vessel will finally happen. Plans were made late yesterday for the sinking at Frying Pan Tower Reef AR 400 on Saturday August 4th.
Currently named the Coastal Mariner the 184’ vessel is scheduled to depart Norfolk Va. under tow Thursday August 2nd for Morehead City, NC.
The vessel should arrive Friday morning. There will be a christening ceremony Friday evening and she will be renamed the Captain Gregg MicKey. This is in honor of Captain Gregg MicKey who lost his life in a diving accident at Frying Pan Tower in June of 2005.
The Captain Gregg MicKey will leave Morehead City Friday night for Frying Pan Tower with the sinking expected sometime late Saturday morning.
This project, almost two years in the making is a joint venture between the Long Bay Artificial Reef Association and the Onslow Bay Artificial Reef Association, of which Captain Gregg was a member.
The journey from Norfolk Va. to AR 400 is a long one with lot variables along the way. I will try to keep everyone posted as it develops.
