Safety zone established for bridge work in N.C.
FORT MACON, N.C. – The Coast Guard is establishing a temporary safety zone Sunday evening on the waters of the Intracoastal Waterway near Surf City, N.C.
The safety zone will be in place from Sunday night to Monday morning for the safety of mariners on navigable waters during North Carolina Department of Transportation’s maintenance on the State Road 50 Swing Bridge at ICW mile 260.7.
The repair work will be performed on the bridge truss located in the center of the channel. The maintenance to the bottom of the truss will be completed by Monday; the DOT will require the swing bridge to remain in the closed position until completion.
The Coast Guard will temporarily restrict access to this section of ICW when maintenance equipment will be obstructing the waterway.
The temporary safety zone will encompass a 100 yard radius on the water directly under the S.R. 50 Swing Bridge centered at position 34°25’53”N; 077°32’59”W.
All vessels are prohibited from transiting this section of the waterway while the safety zone is in effect.
This zone will be in effect from 8 p.m. June 20 through 5 a.m. June 21.
Entry into the zone during the closure period will not be permitted except as specifically authorized by the Captain of the Port or a designated representative. To seek permission to transit the area, mariners can contact Sector North Carolina at telephone number 252-247-4570.
Mariners should exercise extreme caution when transiting the area and maintain the appropriate safe speed in order to minimize wake.
