Boater still missing after Coast Guard, South Carolina DNR search Silver Creek area


GEORGETOWN, S.C. – Rescue crews from Coast Guard Station Georgetown, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office continue to search today the Silver Creek area north of Georgetown for one missing person after a boating accident in the Intracoastal Waterway yesterday evening.


John Nance and Nate Clemons were traveling at a high rate of speed in the vicinity of Silver Creek when the Cigarette boat they were traveling in struck floating debris and caused the vessel to lose control throwing both men into the water.


The Coast Guard received a call from a boater at 7:30 p.m. notifying the Coast Guard of a boating accident involving two people. The Good Samaritan was able to bring Clemons to shore but was unable to locate Nance. Immediately Coast Guard units from Georgetown and Air Facility Charleston responded to the incident. South Carolina DNR also responded with four vessels, one with local divers from Rescue 51.


Horry County Emergency Medical Services transferred Clemons to a local hospital in fair condition. Coast Guard Station Georgetown towed the vessel to Ospray Marina.
