I’m excited to report an important first hurdle in the fight against destructive bottom trawling. This is critical for sport fishermen and all who want to protect our ocean. As you know bottom trawling is the non-selective technique used by commercial fisherman to drag the ocean bottoms in search of their target species. Although they may target rockfish, shrimp or other bottom dwellers, bottom trawls inevitably have huge by-catch ratios, often as high as 95%, and destroy the bottom spawning habitat for all species. Worldwide, bottom trawlers are destroying the bottom habitat equal to twice the square area of the continental United States every year.
