Coast Guard Assists Eight Sailors off the Coast Of North and South Carolina | |
PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Coast Guard rescued the crews of two sailboats caught in a storm packing 35 mph winds and 40-foot seas along the coast of North and South Carolina today. The first rescue took place when Kevin Hogan, Tom Allen, Jacob Hogan, Peter Cousino and Michael Kramer onboard the 44-foot sailing vessel Kintaro requested to be removed from the vessel after it became disabled in 30-foot seas and 40 mph winds 275 miles east of Charleston, S.C. The Coast Guard launched a C-130 airplane from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., and diverted the 846-foot Bahamas flagged Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue (AMVER) vessel CMA CGM Puget to assist. After arriving onscene the crew of the Kintaro was safetly transferred onboard the Puget who plans on transporting them to Bermuda. The second rescue took place soon after when the Coast Guard C-130 crew, flying on the Kintaro case was contacted by the crew of the 34-foot sailing vessel Lotus, who also requested to be removed from their vessel which was caught in the same storm 160 miles southeast of Cape Fear, N.C. A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., airlifted the crew of the Lotus, Edward House, 50, South Carolina, Olga Lyubchenko, 24, and Markus Bear, 53, of the United Kingdom, and transported them to the Wilmington Airport. The Coast Guard strongly urges all mariners to wear thier lifejackets while on the water, have a working radio onboard their vessel to contact help in an emergency and to file a float plan with friends family and their local marina listing the number of people onboard the vessel, their intended destination and estimated time of return. |
