COAST GUARD MEDEVACS 10-WEEK-OLD GIRL

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Coast Guard launched a rescue helicopter today at about 11 a.m. to Johns Hopkins Medical Center, Baltimore, in an effort to save the life of a seriously ill 10-week-old girl.

The girl is at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md., but requires immediate treatment from specialists located at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore.

The Atlantic City, N.J., based helicopter is en route to Baltimore to pick up the specialists and transport them to Salisbury. Once initial treatment is begun, the girl and her doctors will be flown to Martin State Airport, Baltimore, where they will receive alternate transportation to Johns Hopkins Medical Center.

The Coast Guard was requested to assist in this non-maritime effort because neither hospital helicopters nor Maryland State Police helicopters could safely launch due to weather conditions.
