Coast Guard Recognizes Mariners for Rescue NORFOLK, Va. – Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Hampton Roads will present awards to six individuals who helped rescue and resuscitate a commercial fisherman who fell overboard in the Chesapeake Bay on September 9, 2004. Andrew Dickson, working as a deckhand on the fishing vessel FLOWYN, was pulled underwater while setting nets. Crewmen from the fishing vessels BAY LADY and BRITTNEY SUE helped rescue Dickson, who was not breathing when he was pulled from the water only minutes after going overboard. They began cardio pulmonary resuscitation and rushed Dickson to the Virginia Pilot Association’s pier in Lynnhaven Inlet. Once there several pilot association employees boarded the vessel with oxygen and helped revive Dickson. The men being recognized are: Captain Todd Smith of the BAY LADY Crewman Scott Downs of the BAY LADY Crewman William Love of the BRITTNEY SUE Don Hudgins of the Virginia Pilot Association Chip Parks of the Maryland Pilot Association The ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, December 13 at the Virginia Pilot Association facility off Shore Drive in Virginia Beach. In addition to the honorees, other people expected to attend include Dickson and other crewmen from the fishing vessels involved in the rescue. The media is invited to attend.
