Coast Guard rescue crews medevac man from cruise ship near Nantucket, Mass.

BOSTON — Coast Guard rescue crews medically evacuated a 67-year-old man from the cruise ship Queen Mary II, 47 nautical miles south of Nantucket, Mass., Thursday around 12 a.m.

Watchstanders at the 1st Coast Guard District Command Center received a call from the cruise ship requesting assistance for a passenger suffering from severe bleeding.
After a conference call with the 1st District Flight Surgeon, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was launched with a rescue crew to medically evacuate the man. The man was safely hoisted and brought back to Air Station Cape Cod for further ground transport to Cape Cod Hospital.

"Hoisting an injured passenger off an underway cruise ship takes a surprising amount of expertise and moving parts, and our crews take pride every time they do it," said Lt. Joe Klinker, 1st Coast Guard District public affairs officer. "This case is a great example of our unique role as maritime first responders."

His condition is unknown.
