Coast Guard restores aids in inlet near Topsail, NCWILMINGTON, N.C. — The Coast Guard has completed the replacement of the aids to navigation in New Topsail Inlet Thursday.

The aids were temporarily removed in October 2011 due to severe shoaling in the area.

The Army Corps of Engineers was able to dredge the inlet in past weeks, enabling the Coast Guard Cutter Bayberry, a 65-foot buoy tender homeported in Oak Island, to set buoys to mark navigable water this week.

“We appreciate the local community’s patience over the last eight months while scarce resources could be identified and scheduled to dredge and re-open the waterway,” said Capt. Anthony Popiel, the commander of Coast Guard Sector North Carolina. “The safety of the boating public is the top priority of both the Coast Guard and the Army Corps of Engineers. We encourage boaters to monitor inlet conditions and always keep safety as the top priority as well while they are out enjoying the waterways.”
