Coast Guard Saves Man Clinging to Kayak CAPE HATTERAS, N.C. – A man was saved by a Coast Guard boat crew after his Kayak overturned in the Vicinity of Ocracoke Island, N.C., at about 1 p.m. today. The 27-year-old man used his cell phone to call a friend for help after his kayak overturned in the breakers. His friend phoned the Coast Guard. Coast Guard Group Cape Hatteras was then able to call the man directly as he clung to his overturned kayak. A Coast Guard boat crew from Station Ocracoke Island launched and recovered the man. He was then transported to awaiting EMS and taken to Health East Medical Center for evaluation due to exposure. The Coast Guard would like to remind all boaters of the importance of boating safety, wearing Coast Guard approved floatation devices and having a means of communication while underway. In case of emergencies, in addition to monitoring VHF radio channel 16, the Coast Guard can be reached by using your cell phone and dialing star CG (*24).
