An Elizabeth City, N.C., based helicopter is conducting aerial searches. The man was last seen at about 12:30 a.m. when he got up to use the bathroom. The crew of the fishing vessel Captain Garland reported him missing at about 6:30 a.m.

Steven Powers, 53, a Aurora, N.C., resident’s 21-foot fishing boat was reported doing circles, without a pilot, in the Pamlico River between Durham Creek and South Creek. A Coast Guard HH-60 Jayhawk search and rescue helicopter from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., and small boats from Bath, N.C., Fire and Rescue, the Beaufort County Sherriffs Office and the North Carolina Wild Life Department are searching the area. The Coast Guard encourages boaters to wear lifevests, file a float plan with their family and local marina before going out on the water and to have a radio and flares onboard their vessel to alert rescuers in an emergency.
