Coast Guard Searches for Missing Fisherman


PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Coast Guard is searching for a scallop fisherman who fell overboard early this morning about 20 miles off Wachapreague, Va.

The man was last seen at about 12:30 a.m. when he got up to use the bathroom. The crew of the fishing vessel Captain Garland reported him missing at about 6:30 a.m.


Three Coast Guard rescue boats from Chincoteague, Wachapreague and Cape Charles, as well as the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Beluga are searching a 495-square-mile area for the man. An Elizabeth City, N.C., based helicopter is conducting aerial searches.

HOBUCKEN, N.C. – The Coast Guard resumed its search today for a North Carolina crab fisherman who went missing on the Pamlico River Monday.


Steven Powers, 53, a Aurora, N.C., resident’s 21-foot fishing boat was reported doing circles, without a pilot, in the Pamlico River between Durham Creek and South Creek.


A Coast Guard HH-60 Jayhawk search and rescue helicopter from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., and small boats from Bath, N.C., Fire and Rescue, the Beaufort County Sherriffs Office and the North Carolina Wild Life Department are searching the area.


The Coast Guard encourages boaters to wear lifevests, file a float plan with their family and local marina before going out on the water and to have a radio and flares onboard their vessel to alert rescuers in an emergency.
