COAST GUARD SEARCHES FOR TWO MISSING FISHERMEN *UPDATE* 1
PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Coast Guard air and boat crews on the Eastern Shore continued the search this morning for two Virginia Beach fishermen missing since Sunday.
The fishermen’s 12-foot john boat was found overturned in the ocean about six miles east of Wachapreague Inlet. That’s about 23 miles from Wreck Island, where it was reported the men had planned to fish.
A Coast Guard Station Wachapreague 41-foot rescue boat is searching the area around the capsized boat. The fishing boat that first sighted the overturned boat and called the Coast Guard is still at the scene.
A Coast Guard Station Cape Charles-based 21-foot rescue boat is searching for the men along the shoreline between Wreck Island and Wachapreague Inlet.
A Coast Guard C-130 is returning to base to refuel after searching the area since dawn, and a Coast Guard rescue helicopter is en route to the scene to replace another helicopter that left to refuel as well.
Charles Driver and Cameron Deuso, both 43, left Oyster in Driver’s john boat at about noon on Sunday and did not return. They planned to fish around Wreck Island, about six miles from Oyster.
The VMRC notified the Coast Guard that the two men were missing at about 3 p.m. Monday, after Driver’s girlfriend reported him missing.
The Coast Guard and VMRC have been searching an area of about 119 square miles, including marsh and open water.
Weather conditions are conducive to searching, with good visibility and 2-4 foot seas offshore.
The water temperature off shore is about 51 degrees.
The Coast Guard encourages boaters to file a float plan with family members or the marina they sail from before leaving the dock. The float plan should include the time a boater intends to get under way, the number of people on board, the destination, a full description of the vessel, and an estimated time of return.
