COAST GUARD SENDING 58 TO PERSIAN GULF
PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Coast Guard men and women will be leaving Sunday for the Persian Gulf to assist in the efforts for Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Around 4 p.m., the Coast Guard troops are scheduled to board buses and head to the airport from the Holiday Inn in Portsmouth, Va.
The 58 coast guardsmen will bring the total number of Coast Guard men and women in the Gulf to 400. Since Operation Iraqi Freedom began, the Coast Guard has participated in maritime interception operations and coastal security patrols in the Perisan Gulf.
The Coast Guard has also worked alongside the U.S. Navy and coalition naval forces enforcing United Nation sanctions prior to hostilities and preventing the movement of Iraqi military forces and equipment following the beginning of hostilities.
Coast Guard assets and units in the Gulf include six 110-foot patrol boats, a port security unit and two law enforcement detachments.
Vice Admiral Vivien S. Crea, Commander, Atlantic Area, will be at the Holiday Inn Sunday to see the troops off and will be available for interviews.
