Coast Guard Tows Sailboat to Safety in Albemarle Sound


PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Four North Carolina boaters were towed to safety this afternoon after reporting their 42-foot sailboat was taking on water and they were having engine problems.


The owner of the 42-foot sailboat R&R contacted theCoast Guard via VHF radio at approximately 12:45 p.m. today to report that he was having engine problems and feared that his dewatering pumps would not be able to keep up with the flooding.


Coast Guard Sector North Carolina dispatched a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Station Oregon Inlet to assit with dewatering and towing of the vessel.


The R&R was safetly towed to Manteo, N.C.


The Coast Guard strongly encourages boaters to always wear their lifevests while on the water and to have a working aVHF radio onboard their vessel in order to contact authorities via channel 16 in case of emergency or distress.
