Committee Meetings Scheduled for February

The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council will hold a joint meeting of its Law Enforcement Committee and Advisory Panel on February 3 – 4, 2004 in Charleston, South Carolina. During the joint meeting, law enforcement issues affecting federal fisheries will be discussed. These topics include current enforcement efforts and future outreach efforts in the Oculina Bank protected area off the coast of Ft. Pierce, Florida, possible streamlining of regulations to help simplify enforcement, and compliance issues for upcoming management proposals for the shrimp fishery. In addition, members of the AP and Committee will discuss implications of marine protected areas regarding law enforcement and review public input received through public informational hearings.

On February 5-6, 2004, the Council will hold a meeting of its newly formed Ecosystem-Based Management Committee. Using its current Habitat Plan as a cornerstone, the Council is moving forward to develop an ecosystem-based approach to resource management. At this meeting, the Committee will begin discussion of approaches to ecosystem-based fisheries management.
