OK, new to handgun ammo so this is probably a stupid question.
Went to my local gun shop yesterday looking for some 9 MM ammo for my new handgun and they had some 9 MM Luger boxes.
What the heck does luger ammo mean?
Is all 9 MM acceptable (aside from +p)?
9mm Luger is exactly what you are looking for.
Luger in the name of the cartrage designer... just like:
308 Winchester
35 Remington
338 Laupa
Over the years, the "Luger" has been dropped because it has become the standard for 9mm
If you have a modern firearm (made after the 60's) it will be 9mm Luger, If it was made earlier it could use a different ammo but, probably still Luger because that is by far (1000:1) the most used 9mm ammo.
You may see 9mm parabellum, also. It's all 9x19 mm, just different names.
Thanks!
I am new to handguns and just getting familiar with them. Trying to educate myself as much as possible before pulling the trigger
Hope to hit the range in the next week or two
Just to add confusion, I have a Colt 1991 in 9x23 Winchester that will also shoot 9mm Largo. It is a Spanish round with a 9x23mm case. The Largo is not loaded as hot as the 9x23 Winchester and the gun is more prone to jamb when shooting Largos. You have to be looking for these ammos to find it...
I was just wondering what local gun shop had 9mm on the shelf.
Carolina Sporting Arms in Charlotte
2 box limit per customer, 50 rounds per box roughly $18 each box
They had fully stocked shelves, no empty spaces at all
Bass Pro shops in Concord was just the opposite. Only ammo they had was for rifles and shot guns
Be careful as you also have 9mm Corto/9mm Kurz which is 9mm short, 9x17 or .380ACP. Since there has been a bunch of import and "off" brand ammo on the shelf lately you have to be aware of what you are looking for/at so you do not get the wrong ammo.
