just wondering if anyone hunts the cape fear river for ducks often. I hunt around the wilmington area and have seen plenty of birds, but was wondering if there are a higher percentage of certain birds as you go north or south. For instace I have noticed the more north I go the more greenheads and woodies i find, and have heard that the more south you go the more pintails and gadwalls you see, have not hunted south yet.

I hunt at the end of the river and for the most part all we see is divers. Occasionally we kill a few green wings, but thats about it for the puddlers. For the most part we kill buffies, ringers, bluebills, and redheads. Last year we had a few days that we saw some mallards and other big ducks, but they are few and far between.

I really love diver hunting over puddle ducks. Anyone starting to see divers yet?

heard there were divers starting to show up in sutton lake. Hopefully this cold front will start to push more birds down our way. Can't wait till saturday when season opens back up.

Any help here would be appreciated as well. About all I get to shoot is woodies (nothing wrong with that...beautiful and tasty), but would like to shoot some other stuff.

all i know so far is that in order to get ducks other than woodies you have to be willing to travel. Its hard hunting around here. I have tried the waterway, river, swamps etc and still havn't figured it out yet. Going on my third year you would think that I would get the hang of it by now Oops . Try changing up your spread, more or less decoys, hunting areas that you would normally overlook, and when it comes to calling less is more around here.

You will have to burn a little gas to get to the birds most of the time here in SENC. A good decent size boat and lots of decoys for divers is a must. I have never used a call for divers but do use a black flag. Always keep an eye on the weather and have a marine radio too. Being out on the water is a completely different game in December & January compaired to summertime. Use common sense and stay safe! Good luck to everyone for the rest of the upcoming season.
