Help me out ... I am new to this deer hunting thing. I have passed up a big, mature doe for the last two months because she has two fawns with her. I just have a hard time taking "Mommy" in front of her babies. Well ... the season is drawing to a close and I am deer-less and am quickly losing my soft-spot for mom. I need to get one or I'm going to go nuts. So whats the norm? Do you shoot her? I have friends that would shoot the whole family but the reason I come here for advice is I rarely judge my own behavior based on their moral compass Smile

Shot plenty that way. You can also shoot the baby.. Let mom walk with one. The meat is very tender on a yearling. Either way no one will think its wrong. Fill the freezer! Are ya hunting for horns or hunting for meat? If its meat.. Ya know what ya got to do

if you have not seen any other does without fawns all season you need to find another hunting location and let these multiply.

I see nothing wrong with taking all three as long as ya eat'em. I (just me personally) would not just take the "mom" as the babies probably won't last long without her.

The are not that young.... In fact they are not that much smaller than her but I'm confused about why they are still with her.

Hunting for meat. I think I would rather shoot a youngen than the mom now that I think about it.... unless I could shoot all three.

Plenty of other does without fawns.... this family just makes this a regular stop and it would be really easy to take one of them since I have them on a schedule

Fawns have spots. Yearlings do not. Shoot a yearling and leave the mature doe to reproduce.

Choot em Jacob! I've had a wildlife biologist tell me to take em. He said that the fawns/yearlings are completely able to live on their own his time of year. He said the doe you should shoot is the one you have a shot at. Our herd is way overpopulated and killing does is the best tool to slow the population down.

If you know the spot you are hunting will be yours for a few years then let them walk and put them on a year-round feeder. They generally will stick nearby and then when they come in heat its on for the big deer. Be careful with your stand placement. I have killed several big deer doing this and got to the point where I recognized each individual doe.
