I am new to Frying Pan Tower but I am not new to hunting and fishing. I am trying to get into duck hunting but don't know much about it. I have a pond on my farm that seems like its a pretty good pond that could be used to duck hunt in...any advice??? anything that you know about duck hunting that would be helpful to me would be appreciated!
Do ducks land in it? If they do, shoot'em.
Ducks are going to come to water for one of two things.
1) to eat
2) to rest and sleep (roost)
If you have natural food they WILL come. Remember putting out food for them is not legal. Shooting a roost will move them and you only get one maybe two hunts untill they find a safer place.
How much land surrounds the pond and how much of that land can you spare to make a hunting area? What a good friend did was for about 500 feet on all sides of the pond planted corn and milo in very tight rows then when it was harvest time drove a tractor through some of it in a few week intervals and knocked it down he bought one hog and set it on the fenced off area and let it graze and then added a few bags of grain as "hog" feed to supplement what was in the field. He has had great duck and dove shooting over it I just wish it was not in SC so I could go without an overnight stay.
Has anyone ever used any aquatic plants or anything like that to attract? And if so, how well do they work?
First thing to do is "scout!" Go out before sunrise and see if any birds come in...try to stick it out for a few hours cause if there isn't anything in the pond for them to eat then they still might use it as a watering hole if you are near agricultural fields or near salt marsh...Jollymon, not to bust your sack but what your friend did is called baiting! you can't knock down corn and you can't add grain as a "hog supplement." bet it was fun shooting though! 😀
As long as there are livestock in the field it is not baiting to knock down the corn nor to put feed out for the livestock.
