...been hunting the same cut cornfield everyday for the last 2 weeks. Seen NOTHING. Actually, on this entire piece pf property I've been hunting for a couple weeks, hadn't seen the first deer, and very minimal sign for that matter. Walked ALL though the place earlier today looking for anything that looked worth hanging a stand by. Didn't see much, but did find one active scrape so I put a ladder stand 75 yards from it. Watched the first half of the Heels game this afternoon, and convinced myself that even though I had hiked all through the woods today, since it was cold the deer might move. Sat in my newly mounted ladder stand until my legs went to sleep. Around 6:15 decided to just walk down to the field where I had hunted everyday for 2 weeks without seeing anything. I crept around the corner and took a peek into the field. On first look, I didn't see anything. I was gonna head on back to the truck and pack it in. After a couple steps on my way out, something told me to take one more look in the field. This time, I put the gun up and glassed the field with my scope. This time, big boy picks his head up. Hes out about 250 yards at this point and I'm standing there, nothing to rest my gun on. I slowly start to move to my right to get to the edge of the woods to use a small pine tree as a rest. As soon as I get over there, he takes a couple of steps away from me and behind some small vegetation. This whole time, I'm not letting myself look at antlers, just deer. So now I can't see him at all. I move back over to where I started. He didn't like that at all. He flags me and starts trotting towards the back of the field. I kneeled down and found him in the scope. He trotted, not ran, about 125 mare yards away. When he got close to one of the drainage ditch he stopped and turned back to see what I was. Well curiosity killed the deer. As soon as he turned quarting away from me, I let lead fly. Figured, what the heck, if I don't shoot I'll miss him for sure. After I shot, I glassed the field again and didn't see anything. Called my buddy and told him I was pretty sure I just missed a good one, but if I did hit it, I wasn't sure of the placement. I didn't want to jump this thing so I left and went to dinner with my folks. I was pretty sure I had missed the thing simply because it was a 325 yard shot. I was gonna head back out there tomorrow morning and look for him. Finished up dinner a little earlier than I expected so decided to call a friend who lives nearby to help me go look. Told him off the bat that I didn't think I hit it, but owed it to the animal since I shot at it, to at least look for it. We get out there and stomped around the field for about 15 minutes, didn't see anything. Thought to myself, well, maybe I'll get another shot at him. Happened to decide to look down in the ditch in the general area of where I though he was. Somehow, 2 sets of eyes missed him the first time, but I saw him on the second sweep. He went maybe 10 ft. from where I shot him and piled up in the ditch. I was in disbelief. My buddy said, "man that was a longgg shot." I said you know what that's called? He said skill sarcasticly. I said, Nope, BLIND LUCK!! Anyway, I'll stop rambling now. Here are pics. Not the biggest deer in NC, but bigger than I or any of my friends have killed. WHAT A DAY!!! Anyone want to guesstimate for me what he would score? 9.5" inside 16" outside.
