if any of you own one of these guns you probably have had it hang the shell in the chamber and tear off the edge of the brass. only to have to pull it out with a flat head srew driver.I have found a way to keep it from jamming using a over size bore brush, just ream out the chamber where the shell seats until its smooth and don't use any oil when firing it. This has fixed 5 or 6 rifles of mine and friends.

I had one of those I bought back in the 1970's and it was a pain. From what I found out there wasn't any way to fix it. I sold that gun and told the buyer of the problem. Good of you to try to get the word out on a fix. I'm sure it will help someone on here.

i have a 30-06 742 that I bought in 1978 never had a problem with it till about 5 yrs ago. I hunted in the rain with it one day and didnt clean it good. It jammed up the next time I fired it. The chamber was pitted. A gunsmith friend of mine took it and polished the chamber and got it smoothed back out, he told me to make sure that I cleaned it out with the angled bore brush everytime I shot it any. I retired it and havent shot it any since then till this year. I took it out a few weeks ago and shot it numerous times and the old thing worked flawlessly, and was still dead on accurate. I cleaned her real good and put her back up. I plan on hunting with it again next season. I always thought it was a great rifle, and it is if I keep it cleaned good.

that is the key to it after each time I hunt with it I brush out the bore and don't grease until you put it up for the season, the oil in the chamber acts like suction on the casing.
