I know every year opening day of deer season some one kills a nice buck and says he was in full rut, maybe he was, maybe not. This week around Grifton I have shot a 8 point and 7 point bucks with strong rutting odor on their rear hock glands and neck swollen. If you want a nice buck this strong cold front is going to be a great chance to fool a nice buck while he has women on his mind.
Interesting. Awfully early, isnt it?
Monday evening a buddy killed a 9 point with 2 does standing in a wide open field that green scored 140, he said the buck would not leave the does.
My best two bucks were harvested on October 31st and October 30th on consecutive years less than 100 yards from each other. I was hunting Edgecombe County then and both were chasing does. My favorite time to hunt is the last week of October and first week of November. Unfortunately my family lost our deer and turkey lease so I will be focusing on waterfowl and tuna. Good luck to all and be safe
I would tend to agree with the rut coming in pretty strong. This past Sunday, in the 122 mile trip to ECU, I counted 11 on the roadside. .......8 had antlers. I noted to my wife, "see what happens to men chasing women?!"
They are chasing hard here now. Got a 6 pointer last weekend with the muzzle loader. Back at it tonight!
The only ones I've seen chasing around here so far are little cow horns and spikes...hoping big brothers and daddys start chasing soon, I'm not working much the next 2 weeks! :wtg:
Was fortunate enough to have a friend offer his farm for the day and I Got on one Tuesday that was stinking pretty good and his neck was starting to get there. Shot him as a cull buck (was actually looking for a doe) as he was a 3 1/2 year old 16" three pointer. Filled the cooler nicely and has an appointment at the butcher shop this evening
I missed out on our opening day here on Saturday due to back issues, but the city bucks are chasing does like crazy in my yard right now.
was coming to work this morning and saw a nice 6 pointer chasing 5 does around a bean field,
