Saturday morning started out as a consolation hunt of sorts based on my typical appetite for big water duck hunting. I had long left behind the swamps "little boy duck hunting as I sometimes call it" to pursue the more "sporty" pintails, widgeon, canvasbacks, and bluebills most often associated with big water. Nevertheless due to a family Christmas at 12 p.m. and a lack of alternatives I went down to the swamp Saturday morning with my dad. We were greeted with drizzle and a solid flight of ducks starting around 6:55 and saw approximately 200-300 ducks predominately wood ducks with a mixture of hoodies, gadwall, and mallards. I ended up getting my limit of wood ducks and a couple hoodies and enjoyed watching the old man shoot at a few as well. The next three weeks will be better. Campbell Creek Impoundment, Suggs Mill Pond, Southport, Shearon Harris, Roanoke Rapids Lake, and Hobuken are all on the hit list. Good luck to all my brothers of the wing in the third segment! I want to add photos but for some reason it will not let me upload.
Man your hit list are all the places I avoid!
