took 2 friends of mine ducks hunting for their first time to a honey hole about two hours from wilmngton. Thought that for their first time I might as well screw their heads up and show them something you just dont get around here, a ton of birds. Stayed in the blind all day and had ducks come in all day. The lake was almost completely frozen over so we sat in the front where there was some open water. Before I got the decoys out you could hear the wood ducks from underneath the blind, and the geese flying overhead. The only thing that would have made it better would have been if the camera had some batteries that worked. We ended the day with two geese, 9 wood ducks, 1 ring neck, and 2 mallards. What a day. If we could shoot better we would have had a hell of alot more Oops . brad, one of the guys that was with me went through a box of shells before 7:30 LoL . Heck he was so excited i figured let him shoot. He calmed down in the afternoon though and started to lay off the long follow ups. The mourning was wonderfull except for the sky busters, but luckly they left around 8:00. After that it was alot easier to call the birds in. all in all a great day. cant wait to do it again. Cold as hell though. still love it.

Different thing shooting at ducks. Brad probably was shooting them in the butt all day. Got to get out more in front of those ducks.

Most wing shooters that broke their cherry on doves or quail make this mistake. What fools them is the size of the bird. It looks like they are moving slow, but they are booking on. Also, such rookies will shoot at ducks that are way too far off by guessing range based on size.

If the birds act like they might decoy, then best to let them come around another time or two after their first close pass when shots are marginal.

Don't you think?
