Caught during MAD on Saturday. Showed this pic to the USCG member on the dock who works in fisheries enforcement, he was not quite sure either.porgymad_826.jpg

hey, but red Porgy is still open. It makes all the sense in the world to leave open the most restricted type of all the porgys and close the ones that had a limit 5x that.

After comparing pics, I think the knobbed porgy is it..

Too bad the season is closed. We caught a few of them with one huge one.

Also forced to release some pretty ARS and other assorted porgies.

That is clearly a MAD Porgy. It is a complex species resulting from cross breeding of Marine, Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard Porgies. They are only found dwelling on Atlantic coastal live bottom directly under Volunteer type boats and may be taken 360 days a year. The season is closed on the 5 days that citizens take active duty members of the various Services fishing to express appreciation for sacrifice and service. On these 5 days; catch, photograph and release must be practiced.

"Other porgies" are closed, meaning knobbed, scup, whitebone and porgies that do not have a specific management plan.

You can still keep a massive load of 3 red porgy per person per day

I agree, the current state of fisheries mismanagement at the cartel known as the SAFMC is unimaginable. It is to the point where I just ignore their edicts and will keep what I want, when I want. Which is also a reason I rarely post fishing reports any more... Those pinheads

Rusty - that made me laugh! They closed sea bass right before MAD a few years ago, must be an anti military bias at the anti science agency!

we call them Chocolate Porgies... it's just a slang term for any porgy that is not a pinkie/red porgy. there may actually be a specific porgy called a chocolate or choco though.
