Hey y'all! So I've never been out fishing in the ocean and it's something I really want to try at least once. I see a friend of mine posting his pictures on Facebook of his mahi and wahoo and other catches when he goes out with a boat he is friends with and I admit I get jealous.
Is it rude to ask to tag along with someone instead of just going out on a charter?
I'd be willing to help with gas money, bait money, boat cleanup, whatever is needed. I'm in Columbia, so I'd drive to meet you wherever. I don't smoke anything but the occasional cigar (if you enjoy them as well I'd bring a few premiums to share!) and not much of a drinker.
If you have room in a boat, and especially if you like teaching, I would love to give it a try!
Thanks all!

Do you mean Columbia, NC or SC? If NC, I might be able to help you.

It was not inappropriate. But since you have never been out there, it is usually 40-45 miles out at 18-25 miles an hour. We are on the boat at 0500 and underway at 0520. It is two hours out to fish. The weather is more often rough than nice. Offshore fishing is great, I love it, but it is hard work and requires a crew that works well together and know what they are doing. You get back between 1630 and 1800, clean the boat and the fish and I get home (I live here) about 1930-2000 or later. If you get sea sick, you are going to be beyond miserable for 12 hours. People who have room or their boats want people who know how to fish offshore and are not going to get sea sick. We have taken a number of people for their first trip off shore over the years, some have enjoyed it, some have hated it, most only wanted to do it once and just one, maybe two were hooked and have become regular offshore. fishermen. It is even further out to fish in SC.
I recommend that you either get some friends and charter a boat for a trip or that you contact a charter and ask them to hook you up with a "make-up charter".
I fish out of Morehead City, NC which is a long way from you. Sorry for the long reply. I hope that it explains things and helps you.
It is NOT rude to ask and I would certainly ask your friend.

No, thank you very much for the reply. I've been reading some and knew something of the risks.
Was already planning on getting a hotel room on the coast to be at the dock early and bringing a supply of dramamine just in case, although I don't really get motion sickness. I figure if I have to sit and suffer in silence, then it's worth it to actually go out and at least experience it.
I'm pretty light on friends that like to fish. MY dad does get sea sick, so he's pretty much just going to stick to hunting lol.
What's a make up charter?

What's a make up charter?
Sport fishing charters take 6 passengers. Charters are fairly expensive so most people want a full crew to split the cost. You could contact a charter captain and request to get on their 'make up' list. That way you could possibly 'make up' a full crew.

Call or PM Capt. Dave Tilley (910) 264-3973 "Wild Rover II" fishing Charters out of Carolina Beach. This is his site by the way if you don't know. He has split trips from time to time. We have a four some going Friday June 30th 14hr Bottom trip and he may need to fill 2 spots or not, but I know he keeps a list of people for Split trips to help fill the slots. You just have to be flexible to go sometimes.
Great captain and awesome boat. Other great captains on SC can help you as well.
